Aboriginal Reconciliation Action Plan

A Reconciliation Action Plan is a strategic document that supports your organisation’s business plan and where relevant, links to your inclusion and diversity plan. Reconciliation Action Plans outline concrete ways that your organisation can contribute to real reconciliation both internally and within your community.

The best Reconciliation Action Plans are informed by evidence:

  • evidence of your reconciliation journey as an organisation
  • evidence about where you need to improve in terms of your workforce capacity and relationships with Aboriginal Communities;
  • evidence about who your staff are; and
  • whether your spaces are safe for Aboriginal Community.

By connecting this evidence to your other inclusion planning, you will ensure that you reflect the diversity of Aboriginal Peoples properly. This is because Aboriginal Peoples may also identify as being part of the LGBTIQA+ community or may live with disabilities.

Mirriyu Cultural Consulting has extensive experience of working with organisations to help them to establish their Aboriginal Reconciliation Action Plans, whether your focus as an organisation is national, statewide or serves your local community. You have the right partner in us.

How does it all work?

Mirriyu will guide you through the process of connecting to Reconciliation Australia. They’re the national organisation that tracks and reports on reconciliation nationally.

They’re there to support community service organisations, hospitals, service industries, small and medium businessess, as well as schools, kinders and learning centres on their reconciliation journey.

You can’t call what you are doing a Reconciliation Action Plan without approval from Reconciliation Australia. This ensures consistency of actions and makes sure all of the companies that have signed up to a reconciliation journey are moving in the same direction.

Is a RAP for you?

If you’re not sure if you’re too small for a plan, please get in touch. It’s not the end of the world if you’re too small for a formal Reconciliation Action Plan. You can still work with your local community to create a Statement that sets out your commitment to reconciliation.

Depending on your situation, you might also just plan on a more tailored approach to reconciliation through an Aboriginal Engagement Plan that still aligns with the goals of reconciliation and your broader strategic direction. Aboriginal Engagement Plans can still deliver good impacts at a local level when priorities are agreed and delivered with local community.

Mirriyu will provide advice on how to submit your RAP expression of interest and can step you through the templates, including helping you to choose where to start your reconciliation journey.

Working with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community to get your plan right

With consulting services from Mirriyu, you can get clear on your aspirations, barriers, and commitments as an organisation. We start by assessing your organisational culture through workshops and mentoring sessions. We suggest you create strong foundations by completing Cultural Awareness Training, specially designed with your organisation in mind.

After completing training, you’ll need to work with your local community to agree your approach and actions. Your first priority will be the Traditional Owners of the Country you are on. Then you’ll also need to create relationships with other local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in your local community. Mirriyu will link you to resources about Traditional Owners, as well as other mapping other relevant Aboriginal organisations.
